Dermabrasion
This is a minor surgical procedure and more invasive than
microdermabrasion. It involves a rotary instrument that sands down the skin
surface removing the complete epidermis and several layers into the dermis
depending on what you are treating. There is a raw oozing skin surface
created that is uncomfortable and takes about 3 to 5 days to heal. It is a
deeper treatment so the results are better and more permanent. It is an
excellent method of treating acne scars especially when combined with
excision and suture of some of the small scars. The results are long lasting
and can be preserved with other interventions. There can be some lightening
of the skin in treated areas but this is mostly rare and depends on the
depth of treatment. It can be repeated. It heals faster than laser and I
like it a lot for use in small or localized areas where wrinkles are not too
deep. It is combined with facelift and other plastic surgery procedures. It
is best when preceded by a skin conditioning program.
