Chemical Peels
There are many benefits to having a chemical peel. Peels, when
specifically designed for the correct skin type, can improve fine lines,
wrinkles, texture and pigmentation. A chemical solution is the foundation of
most chemical peels, which is used to improve and smooth the texture of the
facial skin by removing its damaged outer layers. Chemical peels can range
anywhere from light to mild to very aggressive. Before considering a
chemical peel, it is imperative that one fully understand its use and its
effectiveness on the skin.
Alphahydroxy Acids (AHAs), such as glycolic, lactic, or fruit
acids are the mildest of the peel formulas and produce light peels. These
types of peels can provide smoother, brighter-looking skin for people who
can’t spare the time to recover from a TCA Peel. AHA peels may be used to
treat fine wrinkling, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and acnes. There
are various concentrations of AHAs, which may be applied weekly or at longer
intervals to obtain the best result.
Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) can be used in many concentrations, but
it is most commonly used for medium-depth peeling. Fine surface wrinkles,
superficial blemishes and pigment problems are commonly treated with TCA.
Because it is a medium depth peel, more than one TCA peel may be needed to
achieve the desire result.
Obagi Blue Peel Once the skin has been properly prepared with the
Obagi Nu Derm system, the skin will be prepared to handle this deep peel.
The Obagi Blue Peel is a mixture of TCA and a methylene blue dye. The blue
dye is added for visability and control. This specific peel is a wonderful
compliment to skin that has been on the Obagi skin program for at least six
weeks. Mostly known as a “weekend peel” it improves pigmentation and softens
wrinkles lines.
Whatever peel your skin type calls for, all peels should be administered
by a well qualified, highly qualified skincare professional. There are many
peels to choose from and they can be customized to compliment your skincare
program, lifestyle, and goals.
